Newcastle's historic Co-op building set to be Regenerated this year

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes

New Year’s Eve, 2011. Newcastle upon Tyne’s iconic Co-op building closed its doors one final time, to mark the end of its 79 year life.

Time, stagnation and targeted vandalism had taken its toll, the building could no longer be maintained to modern standards.

Further thefts of the memorable clock faces by scrap metal thieves soon after its closure, only added to the building’s rapid demise.

The following 2 years of the historic site were spent closed in isolation, until it was bought by DTZ Investment Management for £9m in early 2014.

Interserve, a leading North East construction company, was given the monumental task of redeveloping the 170,000sq ft, six floor, shopping arcade. Work had begun by April 1st 2014 and is expected be fully complete by December later this year.

DTZIM aim to create a mixed-use scheme, incorporating dozens of retail units, a 184-bed Premier Inn, and a large gym. Thus creating an estimated 450 jobs upon opening, and attracting new business visitors to settle in the city.
